In Jeremiah’s day, prophets said what people wanted to hear, not what people needed to hear. We often want a God who is close, but not too close. We want him to be comforting—but not confronting. But the truth of God’s Word is powerful. It is like fire that consumes our self righteousness and purifies us for the Lord. It is like a hammer that smashes through lies and illusions in order to create us anew. God’s Word gives us more than what we want. It gives us the life saving truth that we need.
