Emmanuel is no ordinary name. It means “God with us,” a promise spoken more than 700 years before Jesus was born. When Jesus comes to us, God himself is present. In a mystery beyond our full understanding, God took on our humanity—truly human, yet fully God—and he remains with us still. He draws near in a particular way when his people gather together in worship, just as he has promised. As Christmas approaches, we stand on the edge of that promise, waiting with hearts full and expectations rising. Receive this gift anew as we rejoice in the coming of Emmanuel this week.
